Defining Moments

Defining moments.  There are moments of courage, moments of hope, and moments of defeat.  Our lives are made of these kinds of moments and how we respond to them really define us.
In the Bible, Joshua had a defining moment.  After 40 years of living in the wilderness, God gave Joshua this vision of leading the people to the promise land. This promise land was filled with giants and so much uncertainty. There was much anxiety about this call to change and move forward, but God just simple told Joshua, “be strong and courageous.”
Over and over again in the Bible, we see that the source of our courage is this awareness of God’s presence with us, and with that awareness, Joshua, step by step, lived into the new vision God had given him.  He had no idea what the outcome might be, but step by step, one victory at a time, he was able to lead the people into a new future filled with promise and hope.
You see, it takes courage to move forward into the future God is calling us to, but God is with us, just like He was with Joshua.  So, let’s not let uncertainty and fear keep us from doing what God wants us to do because, you know, when it comes to the end of our lives, the stories we tell won’t be about how big our 401K is, or how many square feet our house is.  It won’t be about the times we could have risked, but we did the safe, comfortable thing.  The stories we will tell at the end of our lives will be those defining moments when we felt God calling us to do something, and we did it even when it was easier not to.  So church, “be strong and courageous, do not be frightened, do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
